Sharepoint Lists XML

Hi all,

I have a list that I import into Sharepoint from an excel spreadsheet using the standard user intefacses for same.

I know that the list is in XML format and that XML file is obviously on the server.

I assume that when the list is served that it is not compiled from more than one file.

Thus I am hoping that if I can know the XML format for a list, and the location that the XML file is stored, that I will be able to automate creation of lists at the least, and both the creation and the posting to the server at the most, say from an MS Access database.

Thoughts, leads, referrals?

Hi John,

When you import the list from an excel spreadsheet, the list definition is only stored in the SharePoint content database. If you want to create more lists based on this list, you can use the "Save list as template" option in the list settings.

Once you have a list template, you can go to the List Template Gallery in Site Settings and save the list template STP to your file system. If you rename the STP to CAB, you can crack it open and examine the contents. If you make modifications to the contents, there are tools that can CAB up the contents. You can then rename the CAB to STP and upload to the List Template Gallery.

Give that a try.
